Green Line Extension Bridge Closures: Timeline, Detours

SOMERVILLE, MA – A series of bridges along the new Green Line route will close for construction in 2019 and 2020. Three closures are planned for 2019: on Broadway between Ball Square and Magoun Square, on Washington Street east of McGrath Highway and on Medford Street behind Somerville High School.

Broadway Bridge

Closure Timeline: March 2019 - March 2020

Location: Broadway between Ball Square and Magoun Square

Traffic Impacts: All cars, cyclists, pedestrians, and MBTA bus routes 80 and 89 will be detoured.

  • From Powder House Rotary, continue onto Warner St.
  • Turn right onto Main St.
  • Turn left onto Broadway
• Westbound
  • From Broadway, turn left onto Cedar St.
  • Turn right onto Highland Ave.
  • Turn right onto College Ave

Pedestrian and Bike Detours

• Eastbound
  • From Broadway, turn left onto Boston Ave.
  • Turn right onto Harvard St.
  • Turn right onto Winchester St.
  • Turn left onto Broadway
• Westbound
  • From Broadway, turn right onto Winchester St.
  • Turn left onto Harvard St.
  • Turn left onto Boston Ave.
  • Turn right onto Broadway

Washington Street Bridge

Closure Timeline: April 2019 - November 2019, then again April 2020 to August 2020

Location: Washington St. just east of McGrath Highway

Traffic Impacts: All cars, cyclists, and pedestrians will be detoured.

  • Turn right onto Broadway
  • Continue on Broadway to Sullivan Square
• Westbound
  • From Sullivan Square, proceed on Main St. to Mystic Ave.

  • Turn left onto McGrath Highway
