koo⋅koo⋅nelli Seeks Community Investment
New sustainable retail concept based in Bow Market is allowing community members to take part in funding its launch.

MainVest is partnering with koo⋅koo⋅nelli, a sustainable retail brand based in Somerville, MA. MainVest, a social investment platform based in Salem, MA, allows both accredited and non-accredited investors to invest in small businesses and receive a portion of their revenue. koo⋅koo⋅nelli chose to work with MainVest in addition to other financing sources because it provides a strong sense of community, allowing early supporters who believe in bringing a sustainable store and gathering place to Somerville to share in its success financially. Through MainVest, the incentives of business owners and investors are aligned: business owners are able to receive flexible startup capital that’s not collateralized; investors feel both financially and emotionally tied to the business, oftentimes becoming regular customers and evangelists themselves. Community investment provides key market validation for new concepts, and as an emerging brand, koo⋅koo⋅nelli is excited to show that sustainability matters to the local community.
Nassy Mornaghi, Founder and CEO of koo⋅koo⋅nelli, states: "koo⋅koo⋅nelli is a one-of-a-kind eco-conscious retail + food + activity + community gathering hybrid store and event space.” Offering a variety of items, such as clothing, household, and lifestyle goods, koo⋅koo⋅nelli will offer healthy foods like grain bowls and smoothies and provide space for events such as yoga classes, pilates classes, and even facials. koo⋅koo⋅nelli will be based in Somerville, where residents have a keen interest in and passion for sustainability and eco-conscious lifestyles. According to koo⋅koo⋅nelli, “Residents of Somerville are civically engaged and globally minded, but need a gathering space to connect with each other and exchange ideas. koo⋅koo⋅nelli will be this gathering space for those interested in civic involvement.” Unlike any other business in the region, koo⋅koo⋅nelli seeks to be a welcoming environment where customers could shop, eat, practice wellness, share ideas, and come together all under one roof. Notably, while sustainability is typically seen as a luxury, the affordable price points within koo⋅koo⋅nelli are designed to appeal to residents and visitors across income levels.
Nick Mathews, MainVest CEO, states “ koo⋅koo⋅nelli is a perfect fit for MainVest. It’s a new business model with a ton of community support that’s dedicated to improving the world. We’re excited to provide an avenue for that community buy-in to truly mean something, helping koo⋅koo⋅nelli come to fruition.” Mornaghi adds, “I'm excited to have the community build koo⋅koo⋅nelli with me, sharing in our success as we build a profitable business that gives back."
