Massachusetts Stores Closed On Thanksgiving

From Burlington Coat Factory to T.J. Maxx, dozens of stores nationwide will stay closed on Thanksgiving Day 2017.

Thrifty shoppers looking to get a jump start on the holiday shopping season by snatching up deals right after Thanksgiving may be out of luck. Dozens of national stores, including many in Massachusetts, will keep their doors closed this year on Thanksgiving. In recent years debate has turned to whether employees should work Thanksgiving evening as Black Friday spills over into the night before. Some object to having to work, while others love getting paid double or triple time.

Those taking the day off from the shopping frenzy also include H&M, Burlington Coat Factory, DSW, Home Depot, Neiman Marcus, Marshalls and T.J. Maxx. (See the full list below.)

National retailers that are expected to open on Thanksgiving include: Best Buy, Kohl’s, Macy’s, Sears, Target and Walmart. Target says it will close at midnight on Thanksgiving, then reopen at 6 a.m. Black Friday morning.

Consumers seem to be ready to spend on gifts, and one forecaster expects sales in November and December to increase a healthy 3.6 to 4 percent from $678.75 billion to $682 billion, up from $655.8 billion last year., says the National Retail Federation. That’s significantly higher than the 10-year average of 2.5 percent and above the seven-year average of 3.4 percent since recovery began in 2009.

"Although this year hasn’t been perfect, especially with the recent devastating hurricanes, we believe that a longer shopping season and strong consumer confidence will deliver retailers a strong holiday season,” NRF President and CEO Matthew Shay said.

Christmas falls 32 days after Thanksgiving this year, one day more than a year ago, and is on a Monday instead of Sunday, giving consumers an extra weekend day to complete their shopping.
