McGrath Highway Plan Calls For Replacing McCarthy Overpass

The project would replace the Route 28 overpass with a boulevard at street level.

SOMERVILLE, MA — The preliminary design phase of MassDOT's McGrath Boulevard Development Project is complete. The plan calls for replacing the Route 28 McCarthy Overpass with a boulevard at street level, in order to support safer pedestrian and cycling routes and reconnect the neighborhoods separated by Route 28.

The design includes two lanes for vehicular travel in each direction, wide sidewalks and landscaping and specialized lanes, signals and intersection features for cyclists. Funding for the project will not be available until 2026, but the city will hold a community meeting next Wednesday, May 22 to discuss the plan.

The meeting will take place in the East Somerville Community School auditorium, 50 Cross St., at 6:30 p.m.
