Median Household Income in Somerville: Latest Census Data

SOMERVILLE, MA – Median household earnings in Somerville trended sharply upward last year, echoing trends at the state and national level.

Annual census data made public Thursday shows that in Somerville, median household income climbed from $53,657 in 2014 to $86,012 in 2015, new numbers show.

"Median" represents a helpful middle point between the upper and lower ranges of income. However, it should be noted that increasing household incomes don't always mean bonuses, raises, or higher-paying work. It can also indicate that people are working more hours, taking on a second job, or making extra money on the side (for example, driving for Uber or selling their hand-stitched superhero costumes on Etsy).

Nationwide, the median household income for 2015 was $56,000, the American Community Survey data shows. In Massachusetts, that number last year was as $70,628, compared with $69,160 in 2014.

Based on that census data, Patch has broken down 2015 household earnings in Somerville, compared with Middlesex County and the rest of the state.
