Somerville Is Curious About New Brewery Coming Next Year

The new spot is slated to open in Davis Square.

SOMERVILLE, MA — A new brewery and taproom is preparing to open in Somerville, bringing craft beer, coffee, and an outdoor beer garden to Davis Square.

Curiosity Brewing Company is planning to open in a space on Day Street adjacent to American Flatbread. The upcoming brewery will feature a taproom and coffee shop with an espresso bar, along with a beer garden and patio planned for the parking lot outside the space.

The business comes from founder Nick DeFae, whose beer recipes have earned medals across six different styles. Curiosity Brewing is planning a 7- to 10-barrel neighborhood brewery and an 80- to 100-seat taproom, with the company describing the concept as a gathering place centered around beer, creativity and community.

Curiosity Brewing plans to focus on New England-style hazy IPAs, low-alcohol beers and non-alcoholic hop teas, in addition to a mix of other beer styles. DeFae's recipes range from IPAs to pilsners and traditional European lagers, according to the brewery's website. The company said its brewing philosophy will focus on experimentation and developing different ways for customers to enjoy craft beverages.

The business is in the process of raising its first round of funding as it works toward opening its physical brewery and taproom.

American Flatbread currently operates its restaurant and Sacco's Bowl Haven at 45 Day St. The location has housed a candlepin bowling alley since the Sacco family opened there in 1939, before American Flatbread later took over the space while retaining its bowling operation.

Curiosity Brewing has not yet announced a specific opening date.
