Obituary: Joan Bishop, 82, of Somerville

Joan grew up in East Boston and moved to Somerville, where she lived for six decades.

SOMERVILLE, MA – Joan Bishop, 82, A 60-year resident of Somerville, formerly of East Boston where she was born and raised, died suddenly on March 26, 2017.

Joan was the beloved wife of 57 years to the late M. George Bishop. Loving mother of Sandra Bishop-Josef and her husband Robert of Fairfax, VA, Alan Bishop and his wife Amy Solano of Malden, Karen Bishop-Dumay and her husband Irvin of Arlington and Peter Bishop of Somerville. Sister of Bette Aia and her husband Michael of NY, Carole Banks and her husband John of NH, Claire Sousa and her husband Robert of Billerica, John Silva and his wife Jan of FL, Malcolm Silva of Saugus, George Silva and his wife Mary of NH, and the late Lorraine Barry and her husband Leo.

Dear grandmother of Ryan, Lauren, Trevor, Zachary, Olivia, and Rafael. Great grandmother of Brianna. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews. The Funeral procession will be held from the George L. Doherty Funeral Home, 855 Broadway (Powder House Sq.) Somerville, Saturday morning at 9:00 am followed by a Funeral Mass in St. Ann Church Somerville at 10:00 am. Relatives and friends invited.

Calling hours Friday 4-8 pm. Interment will be held at Holy Cross Cemetery in Malden. Prior to her retirement Joan was a Financial Assistant for Harvard University. In lieu of flowers donations may be made in Joan’s memory to St. Ann’s Church (memo: for the benefit of the Senior Center) c/o St. Catherine Rectory, 179 Summer St. Somerville, MA 02143. Late member Retired Men’s Club Cribbage Group of Arlington.
