Rep. Capuano Could Face Challenger In 2018: Report
A Cambridge city councilor and MIT graduate is reportedly mulling a congressional bid.

WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Representative Michael Capuano may be opposed by a fresh-faced Cambridge city councilor and "highest-profile Muslim elected official" in the state, according to a Boston Globe report. Nadeem Mazen, a 33-year-old MIT graduate and two-term councilor, is reportedly planning a run against the 10-term Democrat and former Somerville official in next year's primary.
But nothing is set in stone yet, Mazen told the Globe. He confirmed to the publication that he is "beginning to focus on campaign plans for 2018" but declined to comment on any campaign specifics. Patch has reached out to Mazen for comment on the status of his potential bid and will update this story with his statement.
Capuano, who represents Somerville, Chelsea, Everett, Randolph, half of Cambridge, parts of Milton and much of Boston, was first elected to congress in 1998. Representing one of the state's largest Democratic congressional districts, the 65-year-old former Somerville mayor and alderman has a strong base of support at home and has not faced a serious challenger since he was first elected, according to the Globe.
