Somerville Among GoFundMe's 'Most Generous' U.S. Cities

SOMERVILLE, MA — When it comes to giving back and offering a helping hand, Somerville residents are leading the way. According to GoFundMe, the crowdfunding platform that allows people to raise money for celebrations and challenging circumstances, Somerville was determined to be the fifth most generous city in the country.

"Our global community of compassionate individuals has now donated more than 120 million times and raised over $9 billion through donations large and small to help people, causes, and organizations in need," the company said.

The most generous cities in America, based on the number of donations per capita on GoFundMe, are:

1. Marietta, GA
2. Rockville, MD
3. Santa Monica, CA
4. Parker, CO
5. Somerville, MA
6. Bowie, MD
7. Beaverton, OR
8. Whittier, CA
9. Cambridge, MA
10. Oakland, CA

In addition to boasting two cities on GoFundMe's Top 10, Massachusetts was named the most generous state in 2019.

According to GoFundMe, a fundraiser is started every eight seconds on the platform. Forty percent of all donations on the platform are less than $50.
