Somerville Eatery Among Boston Magazine's 'Top New Restaurants'

This Beacon Street restaurant was hailed as a "funky roadside snack shack" that knows its market.

SOMERVILLE, MA – Boston Magazine released its "Top 25 New Restaurants" issue this month, and one Somerville eatery made the cut for the best new additions to the greater Boston food scene. Manoa, a Hawaiian poke shop at 300 Beacon St., landed at No. 18 on the list. The magazine hailed the Pacific-inspired restaurant as a "funky roadside snack shack with really tasty food and a finger on the local pulse."

Brothers Sam and Josiah Bonsey, Hawaiian natives who moved to Massachusetts in middle school, opened Manoa in January. The restaurant's name is taken from the Bonseys' childhood neighborhood in Honolulu.

Poke, a raw fish salad popular in Hawaiian culture, is Manoa's specialty, but the restaurant also deals in pork and chicken for non-seafood eaters. Its website describes it as "inspired by the superettes, drive-ins, and community potlucks of Hawai’i."
