Somerville To Host 2018 MLK Day Celebration

The event, titled "Growing Our Community," will be held Jan. 15.

SOMERVILLE, MA – The city of Somerville's annual Martin Luther King, Jr. celebration event, "Growing Our Community," will be held Monday, Jan. 15 at the East Somerville Community School at 10 a.m. The event will be emceed by Marcus Santos and feature performances by El Sistema and the World Percussion Ensemble, as well as readings by student essay contest winners.

The Somerville Human Rights Commission this year will recognize the work of the late Ralph Hergert, who served as the Somerville Director of Human Services for 11 years. During that time, he helped create the Human Rights Commission and the annual Martin Luther King Jr. celebration.

The event is organized in cooperation with the City of Somerville’s Health and Human Services Department, Office of Diversity, Equity & Inclusion, Somerville Public Schools and the Somerville Human Rights Commission.
