The Davis Square 9/11 memorial — located in the middle of the traffic island — was a 2002 addition to the existing compass rose sculpture, which was created in the 1980s.

Ahead of the first anniversary of the 9/11 tragedy, local sculptor Hilary Scott added a bezel — a device used on compasses to point in a certain direction — in front of the sculpture. The bezel is inscribed with the words "community, service, hope and courage."
