Somerville Police Officer Receives August Service Award

SOMERVILLE, MA — A police officer has been formally recognized for her efforts to revive one of the department's largest annual events.

Officer Priscilla Ribeiro received August's Somerville Service Award after being nominated by Sergeant Ashley Catatao, Mayor Jake Wilson announced.

Ribeiro was credited with bringing National Night Out back to Somerville after the event had been absent from the city for several years. About three years ago, she spearheaded its return and has since devoted time to coordinating the annual celebration, working with community members, local organizations and members of the Police Department.

This year's National Night Out was held on Tuesday, Aug. 4 at Dilboy Stadium and featured bounce houses, character meet-and-greets, a dunk tank, touch-a-truck displays, lawn games, raffles, local vendors, community resources and free pizza. The first 300 children and teenagers to arrive were also offered backpacks stocked with school supplies.

National Night Out is a nationwide campaign aimed at promoting partnerships between police departments and the communities they serve while encouraging neighborhood involvement and crime prevention. The annual event gives residents an opportunity to interact with officers outside of emergencies and learn about local organizations and public safety resources.

Catatao said Ribeiro's work organizing the event has gone beyond putting together an annual celebration, helping strengthen the relationship between the Somerville Police Department and residents.

"Through her leadership, dedication, and genuine passion for community policing, National Night Out has become an opportunity for residents to interact with officers in a positive, welcoming environment, fostering trust, building relationships, and reinforcing the partnership between the police and the public," Catatao said.

Catatao also credited Ribeiro with professionalism, selflessness, and a commitment to the community that extends beyond what is expected of her.

"Officer Priscilla Ribeiro exemplifies the very best qualities of a Somerville Police Officer," Catatao said. "Her dedication to service, commitment to community engagement, and passion for making a positive difference make her exceptionally deserving of the Somerville Service Award."
