Somerville Sharing Early Designs For Road Safety Project
The Somerville Avenue Quick Build Safety Improvements project is part of the Somerville Bicycle Network Plan.
SOMERVILLE, MA — The city's Mobility Division will host an open house on Tuesday, June 9 to share early designs for a series of planned safety improvements along Somerville Avenue between Elm and Bow streets.
The event will take place from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at Conway Park on 550 Somerville Ave. A rain date is scheduled for June 10.
According to the city, the Somerville Avenue Quick Build Safety Improvements project is intended to create a safer travel environment for pedestrians, cyclists, transit riders, and drivers through a series of street design changes.

Planned improvements include crosswalk upgrades, protected bike lanes, bus stop improvements, and parking regulation changes.
The project is classified as a “quick-build” effort, meaning it will not involve full street reconstruction. Instead, the city plans to implement changes using painted pavement markings, signage, flex posts, and other temporary or semi-permanent materials.

Community feedback gathered last summer helped shape the early designs. Outreach efforts included public meetings, surveys, pop-up events, and visits with local businesses.
“At the open house, community members can explore different stations describing aspects of the design and talk directly to the project team about their questions and comments,” the city said in a statement announcing the event.
Residents who cannot attend the open house will still have opportunities to provide input through an online feedback survey, virtual office hours, street outreach pop-ups, and other engagement efforts.
The project is also informed by the city’s Vision Zero initiative, which aims to eliminate traffic deaths and serious injuries, as well as Somerville’s Bicycle Network Plan focused on expanding bike safety infrastructure citywide.
More information about the project is available online.
