Somerville Students Attempt Two World Records

On Monday, students gathered in the SHS library to attempt "most people wearing odd socks" and "most people wearing eye black."

SOMERVILLE, MA – Students at Somerville High School on Monday went for two world records as part of the annual "World Record Day." Now in its third year, the event poses challenges for students and faculty to accomplish.

In 2015, 59 people set a record for "most arm-linked people to stand up simultaneously" and the next year, 264 people flew the "most different flags flown simultaneously."

This year, more than 260 K-12 students and faculty went for two records – "most people wearing odd socks" and "most people wearing eye black." The current record for each is 250 people. The students also ran a clothing drive, with donations going to a local charity.

"This has become a tradition; celebrating our diversity with engaging opportunities for all to experience," Student Government President Ella Sprick said in a statement.

The one-hour process was filmed by WHDH for an upcoming feature on the school.

"With the many community projects that our class has done this year—post-election mannequin challenge, inspirational messages on lockers, kindness cards to all K-12 schools, and free female hygiene products dispensers in bathrooms—it felt genuine to continue giving back," Emily Valenzuela, a senior who ran the charity drive, said.

The school will receive verification on its world record attempts in mid-June.
