WATCH: Somerville Students Hold Walkout To Protest Gun Violence
The newly formed "Students Against Gun Violence" staged their first of planned weekly walkouts Wednesday morning.

SOMERVILLE, MA – A Somerville High School activist group formed in the wake of the Parkland school shooting held its first demonstration Wednesday morning. "Students Against Gun Violence," comprised of close to 50 Somerville High School students, staged a walkout at 8:17 a.m. in remembrance of the 17 people killed at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School Feb. 14.
Hundreds of students joined the group in sitting in silence for 17 minutes before walking over to a nearby park to write letters to, call and email members of Congress.
Missed class time will likely count the same it would for any absence, though students can not be penalized specifically for the walkout, according to the Somerville Journal.
