Somerville's Bow Market Planning Arts Courtyard

The upcoming development is eligible for matching funds of up to $50,000 from MassDevelopment for a courtyard to showcase artists.

SOMERVILLE, MA – Upcoming Union Square development Bow Market, which will feature over 30 retailers and vendors when it opens this year, is seeking funding for an arts courtyard. The market is looking to create an arts courtyard and has been selected to receive matching funds of up to $50,000 from MassDevelopment for arts programming and infrastructure.

Funding will go toward an Artists in Residence program that will allow painters, sculptors and visual and performing artists to lead workshops, curate shows and create large-scale murals and installations, the developers said. It will also be accessible to community groups and local arts organizations for meetings and planning sessions.

Bow Market developers have set up a fundraiser on patronicity.com with a goal of $50,000. According to the campaign, money will be used for the following:

  • Murals and wall infrastructure to support an on-going public art program
  • A stage -- both literal and figurative -- for street performers and classical musicians alike
  • Lighting that showcases installations and murals and creates a safe environment for visitors
  • Flexible, sturdy, all-season seating
  • Union Square Main Streets and other community groups will assist in programming the courtyard with markets, festivals, and other public events that bring residents together in an inclusive, family-friendly setting.
