Ward 3 Alderman Candidate Ben Ewen-Campen’s Campaign Launches Voter Registration Drive

Press Release from The Committee to Elect Ben Ewen-Campen

SOMERVILLE, MA-- Volunteers for Ben Ewen-Campen’s campaign for Ward 3 Alderman were out knocking doors and registering new voters this weekend. They kicked off the voter registration drive at the Union Square Farmer’s Market on Saturday morning, followed by door-knocking on Saturday and Sunday afternoons. The campaign plans to continue registering new voters throughout the election season.
Municipal elections are historically low-turnout. In Somerville, a municipal-only ballot may draw as few as 17% of registered voters. A central theme for Ewen-Campen’s campaign is making sure that Somerville residents are connected to their government and that elected officials are accountable to residents. Voter registration is a vital part of expanding the electorate and bringing new voices in to participate in local decisions.
Ward 3 in particular has a high proportion of renters, one third of households change occupancy every year. Even frequent voters do not always realize that they must re-register to vote when they change address.
Several organizations are planning voter registration drives and door knocking campaigns for local candidates for office in Somerville this election cycle, including Our Revolution Somerville (ORS) - an organization that started after the Bernie Sanders presidential campaign - and Democratic Socialists of America (DSA).
Election day is Tuesday, Nov. 7, 2017. You can learn more about Ben Ewen-Campen and his campaign by visiting https://www.benforward3.com.
