5 Things, Including a South End Kid's Brush with Hizzoner

Five things you need to know today, May 24.

1) Me and Menino down by the school yard: Congratulations to South End third grader Shomaury Joseph, who recently helped Mayor Thomas Menino cut the ribbon of a new outdoor classroom at the Thomas Edison Elementary School in Brighton. The initiative takes Boston’s asphalt school yards and transforms them into greener, more welcoming spaces. You can see Shomaury and Menino in the photograph above.
2) In case you missed it:
The that takes advantage of surplus space around the city, but forces the Mission Hill K-8 school to move to Jamaica Plain. The councilors voted for the plan but excoriated the School Committee, saying a lack of planning forced them into approving a plan so unpopular with parents.
3) Slow going up north:
Getting to Somerville, Medford, Malden and Melrose is about to get tough and stay that way for a while. The Orange Line is slated for two years of weekend work while a new Assembly Square station is built. The work fortunately won’t involve the Back Bay or Mass Ave. stations, limiting the inconvenience.
4) Post your events on South End Patch:
Posting an event is a fast and easy way to spread the word about your shindig to the people in the neighborhood. Just click here and in two minutes’ time, you’re event will be live on the site.
5) Weather:
Yesterday’s forecast projected a dreary, drizzly day, and we got mostly sunshine and warm temperatures. Spring in New England can be a crapshoot in that way. The National Weather Service predicts Sunshine and a high temperature of 75 degrees, though there’s a slim chance of rain in the afternoon.
