Huge Fine for Company in Fatal South End Trench Collapse

Atlantic Drain Service is guilty of 18 violations related to the October incident which killed two workers.

BOSTON - The company behind the fatal South End trench collapse that killed two workers in October has been heavily fined for numerous violations.

Atlantic Drain Service has been fined $1.4 million for 18 violations following an investigation by the Occupational Health and Safety Administration.

Robert Higgins, 47, of Warren, RI, and Kelvin Mattocks, 53, of Brockton died after being trapped in a 2-by-20-foot trench in the area on Dartmouth Street on Oct. 21. The trench was filled with water after a water main break.
