Suspect in Double Murder of Engaged Doctors Arraigned in Hospital Bed

Bampumim Teixeira was shot by police after allegedly killing two doctors in a South Boston condo complex.

BOSTON, MA – The man charged in the killing of two doctors was arraigned in his hospital bed Monday afternoon. Two not-guilty pleas were entered on behalf of 30-year-old Bampumim Teixeira, a former concierge at the South Boston condo complex where the two bodies were found.

Teixeira was ordered held without bail at his bed in Tufts Medical Center. He is accused of killing Lina Bolaños, 38, and Richard Field, 49, in their 11th floor penthouse condo Friday night. The two victims were engaged to be married.

Boston Police responded to a call from the front desk of the luxury building just before 8:40 pm. The caller said he had been told to alert police to a “serious situation” involving a gunman in the victims’ apartment. Then police received a call from that person, who again described the text message.

Police found a set of keys outside the 11th floor apartment. They entered after knocking and identifying themselves.

The officers started to sweep the area - which the Suffolk County DA's office noted was "darkened" - when they encountered Teixeira, wearing dark clothing. Two officers, who prosecutors said believed Teixeira was pointing at or fired a weapon at them, shot him. Teixeira was struck in the hand, abdomen, and leg.

Boston Police Commissioner William Evans initially said Teixeira was shot by police after he shot at them.

"[The situation was] chaotic, dark, high tension … officers believed he pointed a weapon at them," Suffolk County DA Conley said. "We are not drawing any negative connotations of these actions, we are simply looking to correct the record."

Officers provided first aid outside the apartment, where Teixeira allegedly said another person would shoot officers if they went back inside.

Teixeira was transported to the hospital and a Boston Police entry team secured the apartment and found the bodies of Bolanos and Field, having suffered “obvious trauma,” Suffolk Chief Trial Counsel John Pappas said.

Investigators also found a black backpack full of jewelry, as well as a replica firearm and at least one knife, prosecutors said.

Conley also said it appears Teixeira did not know the victims, again correcting what Evans initially said.

Teixeira was held for violating the terms of his probation following his nine-month incarceration on two larceny convictions. He pleaded guilty last year to passing notes and demanding money from a downtown bank on two occasions. No weapons were shown and there were no injuries in either case.

Field worked at North Shore Pain Management in Beverly. He was remembered in a Facebook post as a "valued member of the medical community and a tremendous advocate for his patients."
