Springfield City Council votes for fare-free bus program funding (wwlp.com) — Springfield’s City Council has unanimously backed continued funding for the fare-free PVTA bus program, urging the governor and Legislature to support it in the 2027 state budget and beyond. The resolution comes just days before the current free-ride program ends June 30 and amid youth disturbances at Union Station. City leaders, including Mayor Sarno, say they want safe, free busing while tackling problems caused by a small number of riders.

Foundation for TJO Animals to hold 24-hour Day of Compassion (westernmassnews.com) — Springfield pet lovers can support abused and neglected animals this Wednesday during the Foundation for TJO Animals’ 24-hour Day of Compassion, centered on a pet food drive at the Thomas J. O’Connor Animal Control & Adoption Center. Donations will bolster the Reese Fund’s emergency medical care and the Reese Pet Food Initiative, which helps local families feed and care for their pets.

Springfield Freeman Academy Ballers win US Open East title (wwlp.com) — Young hoopers from Springfield, the Springfield Freeman Academy Ballers, just captured the 2026 US Open Basketball East Championship in North Carolina, beating the New York Gauchos. Led by former UConn standout Kevin Freeman, the team credits months of hard work and focus for the win. They’ll represent Springfield again at AAU Nationals in Orlando this July, chasing another major title.

4. Senators Markey, Warren, Rep. McGovern Celebrate Successful Efforts to Save Shutesbury and Medway Post Offices, Urge USPS to Halt Closures at Other Post Offices (senate.gov) — Springfield residents in Pine Point are still facing uncertainty as USPS negotiates over the future of a local contract postal unit, even while Shutesbury and Medway have secured their post offices. Senators Markey and Warren and Rep. McGovern are pressing USPS leaders for stronger postal service in Springfield and other communities, arguing every neighborhood deserves reliable, local mail access.
