Stoneham Patch Whiz Kid of the Week

  • Bobby Giordano 17
  • Accomplishment: While the Spartans hockey team is 5-8-2, Giordano has been playing great hockey between the pipes for the Spartans all year.

Key to Awesomeness: Giordano is the starting goaltender for the Stoneham Spartans and while the Spartans record is 5-8-2, Giordano has been making strides all year to help his team throughout the season.

Giordano attributes his success to his mental toughness night in and night out as a goaltender.

“It is all about mental toughness. To be a successful goaltender, you have to keep things in perspective and not get down on yourself,” Giordano said. “Also, I have worked with the coaches at ‘Stop it Goaltending’ since I was 11 years old which has taught me the technical side of goaltending.”

Giordano also admits that the reason why he is improving is because he is getting more repetitions in games.

“I have gained more experience this year because I have started each game,” Giordano said. “This year, the games have been more intense and close. I have more confidence due to the improved play of my team.”

Goaltenders are usually on their own most of the practice and games, but Giordano finds ways to connect with his teammates on and off the ice.

“I connect with the players on the ice by connecting with them off the ice,” Giordano said. “I have played with most of the team for many years and many of them are my close friends. Also, the team spends a lot of time together during the season.”

Giordano recognizes he still has some weaknesses to work on to get better in net for the Spartans.

“My biggest strengths are my butterfly, positioning and my strong glove,” Giordano said. “I want to work on getting better and being quicker moving side to side.”

Giordano continues to work toward his goals this season.

“My goals are to let in no weak goals, stay focused and most importantly have fun,” Giordano said.
