Car Accident Cuts Power To Office Park

Fire Chief Matthew Grafton and Police Chief James McIntyre report that the Stoneham Fire and Police Departments responded to a motor vehicle crash that caused a power outage at a local office park Friday.

At 2:38 p.m., Stoneham Fire received reports of a crash at 100 Maple St. Upon arrival at 2:41 p.m., officials observed that a car had crashed into a power transformer on the side of a commercial building.

An on-scene investigation concluded that the driver, a 69-year-old woman, was traveling east on Maple Street towards Main Street when she veered off the road, causing her car to drive over multiple medians in between telephone poles, striking the building’s power transformer.

The crash dislodged the power transformer from its foundation, causing a 30-gallon oil spill. Eversource arrived on scene to confirm that the power was disconnected and the car was not energized so firefighters could extricate the woman from her vehicle.

The driver was transported to Winchester Hospital with non-life threatening injuries. No other injuries were reported.

Power in the building remains shut off while Eversource crews work to restore the damaged transformer.

Stoneham Police and Fire cleared the scene at approximately 3:45 p.m.
