Cory Mashburn Announces Candidacy for Stoneham School Committee
Father, Educator, and a Prevention Specialist

Hello, I am Cory Mashburn. I am a father of 2, an educator, and a prevention specialist. I moved to Stoneham in 2015 to make sure that my children would have the opportunity of a good education. I grew up in a military family and attended four high schools, 1 middle school, and 3 elementary schools. I received a bachelors in Recreation Resource Management from the University of North Carolina at Wilmington. While studying for my bachelor’s degree and after graduating I worked with people with developmental, learning and behavioral disabilities in a camp setting as a staff and then as a director.
As an adult I went back to school for master’s degrees in Criminal Justice, Project Management, and Educational Leadership.
For the last 10 years I have been the Director of the Somerville Office of Prevention and I am responsible for a coalition of over 2000 people. Much of the coalition’s success is a result of collaboration with key stakeholders, the implementation of unique communication campaigns and applying diverse strategies in a variety of settings. All events and strategies are designed to address prevention of underage drinking, substance use, tobacco use, and the promotion of healthy behaviors. One of the biggest opportunities I have every day is working with Somerville Public Schools on prevention initiatives to address bullying, substance use, social/emotion behavior, and mental health services.

I am running for school committee as a parent, educator, and a prevention specialist. I have dedicated most of my career to understanding and improving children’s lives within a community and school setting – now I would like to bring that experience to serve the students and families of Stoneham, MA as your representative on the school committee. I believe that the public schools in Stoneham are doing great things for our students. My goal is to keep holding our schools to the high standards that have been established, and to help them grow using policies rooted in research and evidence, in order to ensure that all students in Stoneham, MA receive access to a healthy and high quality public education.
