D1 Dynamite Takes Over TD Garden For MIAA Championship Match!
The St. John's Prep Eagles took the game in a long-shot, last second goal, defeating the Winchester Red + Black 3-2.
BOSTON, MA- The TD Garden was jam packed Sunday night for a mega D1 Championship match between #1 seed, St. John’s Prep and #11 seed, Winchester. After a nearly two hour delay due to earlier games extensions, the fanbases of the two rival team’s were fired up and ready to witness a well-fought match. They definitely got what they desired. The game began with a gridlock start and both teams starting lineup players holding extreme ground. Prep Defenseman JR Goldstein (11), scored the first goal for the Eagles, late into the first period. However, the lead was not long-lasting, as Winchester left-wing Chris McCarthy (11) brought a controversial power-play just seconds into the end of the first. But, this is only where the action begins. Second period launches with McCarthy’s first goal of the night, taking Prep goalie AJ Farese (11) by surprise with a backhand shot. Winchester then feels the momentum tying up with the Eagles, but the third period brings a feisty fight across McCarthy and Senior Captain Johnny Tighe of St. John’s. McCarthy scores a second goal at 4:08 in, leaving Winchester confident in the 2-1 defeat against the heavily favored and playoff undefeated Eagles. However, the Prep comes back by storm, hungry and driven to bring home the second MIAA championship in three years. Tighe ties it up mid-third, with a hammer ppg, and then keeps the momentum flowing across the team and fan section, putting it all in for the win. Then, with just seconds left, a game destined for overtime finalizes with an epic goal from Tighe, an instant before the buzzer beater. The Eagles win 3-2, and Tighe displays as the clear hero of the game and of the Prep’s astonishing season. With mixed emotions throughout, Prep Head Coach, Kristan Hanson was confident in the team’s ability to achieve victory with the family mindset instilled all season. “The guys are driven and have demonstrated top skill and quality teamwork,” said Hanson. When we asked about his team captain, he said “Johnny did what you have to do when you have to win a hockey game. You can’t teach that”. Congrats to the SJP Eagles on another fantastic season and bringing home another trophy to Danvers.
