Democracy Takes Many Hands

The Stoneham Public Library will showcase a community art exhibit on the theme of democracy at a reception on Tuesday evening, July 20, at 7 p.m. The public and art contributors are cordially invited to attend.

The exhibit highlights photography, painting, word art, and sculptures from over 30 contributors, including students at Stoneham High School.

The show includes 16 framed pieces, art exploring the meaning of democracy in our everyday lives, created by members of the community, ranging from Girl Scout Brownies to seniors.

A highlight of is the exhibit is “Democracy Requires Many Hands,” a display of 21 sculpted hands by students in the ceramics and sculpture class at Stoneham High School.

“The hands were a way of communicating the students’ ideas about individual voices and action, coming together to create democracy,” said Becky Rebentisch, art instructor.

Sponsored by the Library and Stoneham for Social Justice, the art collection presents submissions to the call for art on the theme of democracy, issued in February. The art reflects a range of perspectives on democracy expressed by Stoneham area residents.
