Units from Stoneham and surrounding communities knocked down a fire at 65 Spring St. in Stoneham Wednesday afternoon.

Several fire departments battled a three-alarm blaze at a Spring Street home in Stoneham Wednesday afternoon.

The fire broke out around 2 p.m. at 65 Spring St. The blaze appeared to be contained to the upper level of the two-level house.

A mixture of dense grey and black smoke billowed through the rooftop, with some flames concentrated in the right portion of the roof after firefighters axed into the roof to gain access to the fire. Shortly before 2:40 p.m., the blaze appeared to be knocked down and under control.

Melrose Ladder 1 and Woburn Ladder 2 were at the scene to assist Stoneham, along with firefighters from Reading, Wakefield and other fire departments.

Assistant Town Clerk Maria Sagarino, along with her two children and husband, live on the lower level of the Spring Street residence, while her parents and sister live on the upper level which was badly damaged in the fire.

"It's a two-family (home) and I grew up in this house," Sagarino said. "My parents, Donald and (Debra) Roberto, own this house and they are away in California right now and it was their part of the house that caught on fire."

According to Sagarino, who was working at Stoneham Town Hall in the Town Clerk's Office, her grandfather was inside the home when he heard the smoke detectors going off and thought the batteries just needed to be replaced because he didn't smell smoke at first. However, he discovered there was a fire shortly thereafter and called 911, she said.

The upper level sustained the majority of the damage in the fire, said Sagarino, who toured the upper level of the house following the blaze.

"It's a mess," she said. "There's water and glass everywhere. Their whole laundry room and whole master bathroom is completely gutted. (Firefighters) knocked out all the windows so there's glass everywhere, and the water damage goes down below to their kitchen."

Sagarino said the residence is insured, adding that her family first moved into the home in 1972.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation, and some firefighters remained on scene after 4 p.m.
