Is The Future Of Route 1 Destined To Be A Chicken Coop?

SAUGUS, MA- “Winner, Winner, Chicken Dinner!”, or so they say. The North Shore is unarguably a dining destination, and with some new additions on the way, you’ll have a new choice to make: Coop or Cook. Route One in Saugus has been pretty vacant lately, with the closure of a variety of places including Alto Decor, Boston Market, Sakè and more recently, Fuddruckers. While more new spots for your chicken fix are in the works, some are already open amongst the hectic highway.

First up is Dave’s Hot Chicken. Located at the former Angela’s Coal Fired Pizza on Rt 1 North, Dave’s is a fast casual, easy going, well vibing chicken destination serving it all up Nashville style. With eight flavor spices from none to Reaper (which actually requires a waiver), there’s something for everyone on their simple menu of tenders, sliders and fries. “We’re so happy to bring Dave’s to Saugus and to be part of this great restaurant”, says Al Graziano, a franchise owner of the location as well as several other area Dave’s. He gave credit primarily, however, to his team and customers as opposed to the chicken, saying “The people really get the vibe, and we just have fun with it all”.

Also now open is a location of Wing Stop. Located in the Shops at Saugus next to Harrow’s Chicken Pies (formerly Liberty Travel), Wing Stop serves a variety of bone-in and boneless wings, as well as other delicious chicken concoctions.

As far as what is to come, Chick N More, a Halal style fast-casual chicken is expected to open in the coming weeks at the former Boston Market location at the Walnut Street exit. While representatives declined comment to Patch, a general statement described the concept, confirmed their arrival, and said that they are “looking forward to opening Chick N More in Saugus in the near future”.

Also dipping their toes into the waters of fast-casual diners are two national chains: Popeyes Louisiana Kitchen and Raising Cane’s. Both specialize in traditional fried chicken, just like grandma would make. While neither establishment would directly confirm their intent to follow through on opening, permits have been approved through the Town of Saugus for Popeye’s to open at the former Sakè Japanese Restaurant on the northbound side, and for Raising Cane’s to raise the roof directly across the street at a vacant property (formerly Alto Decor).
