Maria Soares Passes Away

Longtime Stoneham resident was a great cook, and made the best chicken soup (canjinha).

Maria de Lurdes (Teixeira) Soares, of Stoneham, formerly of Somerville and Ribeira Grande, Sao Miguel, passed away peacefully on Monday, Sept. 17 at her home with her family by her side. She was 88.

Born in Ribeira Grande, Sao Miguel, in the Azores, Maria was the daughter of the late Manuel and Cremilde de Jesus (Pereira) Teixeira. Maria immigrated from Sao Miguel in April of 1974.

She devoted her life here raising all of her grandchildren and one great grandchild, who were a source of great pride to her. In addition to her family, she was very devoted to her faith and God. Maria always put a smile on everyone's face and made anyone who met her feel loved and welcome. She would do anything to have fun with her kids and her grand kids. She enjoyed sitting by a fire, going to festas and vacationing with her family. She was a great cook, and made the best chicken soup (canjinha). She loved animals and her cat Junquilho.
Maria was a loving daughter, wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, sister, aunt and friend.
She will be missed by all who knew her.

Maria is the beloved wife of the late Manuel Soares. Cherished mother of Eduarda Damaso and her husband John, Dolores Garcia and her late husband Luis, Manuel T. Soares and his wife Eduarda. Devoted grandmother of 9 and great grandmother of 8. Dear sister of the late Manuel Aires Teixeira. Also survived by many loving nieces and nephews.

A Funeral Service Celebrating Maria's Eternal Life will be held on Friday, Sept. 21 in the Barile Family Funeral Home 482 Main St. (RT28) Stoneham at 11 am. Interment will be in St. Patrick Cemetery, Stoneham.
Family and friends are kindly invited to gather and share memories with the family on Thursday, Sept. 20 from 5–8 pm in the funeral home. Parking attendants and elevator available.
