New School Year Means New Clothing Lines, Fashion Trends At Stoneham High

Two Stoneham High School students, Brenton Doyle and Tiffany Shaheen, describe their current clothing styles and the trends throughout the school.

The leaves are beginning to fall off the trees and fall sports are beginning their practices. September has arrived which can mean only one thing: School is back in session.

It was much easier when you were little and your mom or dad dressed you and sent you off to school, but times have changed. Fashion and clothing become a big decision before you walk through the threshold of . What clothes do I wear? What shoes do I wear? Do I wear a hat? All these are questions that many high school students ask themselves to fit in.

Brenton Doyle, a senior at Stoneham High, discussed what clothes were in-style and what clothes were out-of-style.

“Boat shoes, Air Max’s and calf socks are starting to become in style now,” Doyle said. “The brand name American Eagle and Aeropostale are back in style now as well. I personally like these stores because they have a lot to pick from for t-shirts and polos.”

Doyle also described clothes that he will not wear to school this year.

“What I personally won’t wear is skinny jeans and anything that is skater,” Doyle said. “I won’t wear anything bright or vibrant, anything that calls for attention. I mainly stick to classic looks.”

Doyle prefers the simplistic look of wearing a t-shirt and shorts or jeans.

“I will usually just wear a nice t-shirt with jeans,” Doyle said. “On special occasions, I will wear plaid shorts, but not bright plaid or checkered.”

Doyle recalls what he wore when he was younger, when no one judged him and when it was much easier.

“My favorite outfit was my blue Nike basketball tank top with matching shorts,” Doyle said. “After my mom washed it and put it in my dresser, I would go right up to my room and put it on.

“Now, I wear what I feel most comfortable in. I try to stay away from what is cool because then I would be a follower. I try to wear what I want and hopefully become a leader.”

On the other side of the spectrum, fellow Stoneham High student Tiffany Shaheen described what clothes were in-style from a girl's point of view.

“The clothes that are 'in' in the high school right now are high-waisted skirts and shorts, satchels, skinny jeans and flowy tops,” Shaheen said. “The clothing that is 'out' is anything with animal print and jean skirts.”

Shaheen wears traditionally what a girl in high school would wear to school, but popular brand names are not very important to her.

“I wear Pac-Sun, American Eagle, BP at Nordstrom’s and anything from Forever 21,” Shaheen said prior to school starting on Wednesday. “The first day of school I plan on wearing a blue floral sundress from Forever 21 with flip-flops.”

Shaheen also looked back a few years ago and remembered her favorite outfit that she wore at .

“My jeans and any shirt from Hollister or Abercrombie were my favorite,” Shaheen said. “In middle school, those were the two stores that most kids shopped at.”
