At about 5 p.m. Tuesday, the fire department received a call about a brush fire in a remote part of the woods behind the  and the former Boston Regional Medical Center. Stoneham Patch was unable to gain access to the fire, which never put either complex in immediate danger due to its remote location.

With the unseasonably warm weather, Rolli said the department has been fortunate that it hasn't had to contend with a brush fire of this magnitude sooner.

"We got a call about a brush fire, with woods flaming. It's from the dry weather," Rolli said. "It's hard to access it. We don't have any hydrants in there, so we have to shuttle water in once a truck finishes water hopefully the other one gets back up there with water."

Eight firefighters and two fire trucks battled the blaze on Tuesday, according to Rolli.

"Engine 4 is filling up now and Engine 1 is dropping their water off," he said shortly after 6 p.m. Tuesday. "We have about 10 minutes worth of water on the truck."

"They kind of have the running fire knocked down, but unfortunately the fire burns down so we really have to bore it to get it out or it will start again tomorrow," Rolli said, adding that he'll send a crew back to the site on Wednesday along with the Department of Environmental Protection.

Wakefield Fire Department covered Stoneham fire station while Stoneham firefghters tended to the fire.

"We'll probably hold over guys who are working (Tuesday night), come up (Wednesday) and take care of hots spots there, but I'm not going to have guys in the woods overnight because (they) will just get injured," Rolli said.

The cause of the fire is currently unknown, according to Rolli.
