UPDATED: Hazmat Team Investigating Suspicious Powder at Stoneham Police Station

A man walked into the police station with an envelope containing a suspicious powder, according to police.

A Hazmat team is investigating a suspicious powder found in an envelope Monday night at the Stoneham police station, according to police.

"A gentleman walked into the station claiming to have an envelope with some powder in it," said Sergeant Steven Nims outside the entrance to the station. "We called the haz-mat team and they're assessing it right now. This matter should be resolved shortly."

Nims declined to comment as to whether anything was written on the envelope or if it was addressed to a particular person. He also declined to provide additional details while the investigation is ongoing.

Hazmat vehicles could be seen parked behind the station and the team appeared to be working in the parking lot area. 

At 9 p.m., Twitter user @brianjdamico tweeted "Stoneham MA - 47 Central St (Stoneham PD) - Tier 1 HAZMAT requested for suspicious powder." Other emergency Twitter users have also tweeted similar reports.
