Representative Day Opposes Transportation Cuts That Hurt Seniors

Says cuts to "The Ride" hurt most vulnerable citizens.

State Representative Michael S. Day and many of his colleagues in the Legislature joined together to oppose cuts proposed by the Baker Administration to “The Ride,” a service of the MBTA that provides transportation to seniors and individuals with disabilities.

In a letter signed on March 28, 2017 by forty Representatives and State Senators, Representative Day and others urged Governor Baker, Secretary of Transportation Pollack, and MBTA Chief Administrator Shortsleeve to reconsider proposed cuts to The Ride that officials floated last month. Under the proposal, the MBTA would suspend certain trips currently offered on The Ride in a cost-saving measure.

“These proposed reductions in services are particularly troubling given the fact that we appropriated $187 Million to the MBTA in fiscal year 2017 specifically to avoid these kinds of service cuts,” stated Representative Day. “The cuts to The Ride would leave many of the Commonwealth’s most vulnerable residents without access to affordable and reliable transportation. I heard from many seniors and individuals with disabilities who rely on The Ride for their transportation needs that cutting this service would make it difficult or impossible for them to maintain employment, run errands, make their medical appointments, and continue enjoying their current quality of life and independence. While I agree that the MBTA must find a fiscally sound way forward, it should not be at the expense of those who rely on The Ride, and we in the Legislature remain committed to making public transit in Massachusetts accessible, affordable and reliable for all.”

Within a week of receiving the letter from the Legislators, MBTA officials announced that they would explore other options for cost control at The Ride in an effort to avoid a reduction in services.

“As the MBTA continues to propose various cost saving measures, I will remain vigilant and oppose any proposals that include draconian cuts to service. I encourage residents to continue to contact me with their questions, concerns and ideas,” said Representative Day.

“Input from those who rely on the T and their services is imperative as my colleagues and I work with the Baker Administration to keep our public transit cost-effective and efficient.”
