School Building Committee Hires Perkins and Will design firm
SSBC Takes Exciting Next Step toward Stoneham's high school of the future
Stoneham, MA – On Monday, June 22, 2020, the Stoneham School Building Committee (SSBC) officially hired Perkins and Will, a global architecture and design firm with a local studio in downtown Boston, as the next step in the Stoneham High School project. Perkins and Will, leaders in designing award winning, inspirational and forward-thinking school projects throughout the Commonwealth, was one of three finalists selected to make full presentations from a field of fourteen firms submitting proposals for the project. During those presentations, representatives of the Massachusetts School Building Authority (MSBA), the state agency that oversees all school construction, commented on the fact that Stoneham received a record number of proposals and on the impressive depth and scope of discussion that preceded the vote, which ultimately resulted in the MSBA’s approval of Perkins and Will.
In December, 2019, the MSBA, which will provide Stoneham a grant of up to 52.06% of the Feasibility Study costs, invited Stoneham into the grant program to develop a cost effective, sustainable and educationally appropriate solution to the aging Stoneham High School. In April 2020, the SSBC hired Symmes Maini & McKee Associates (SMMA) of Cambridge, MA to manage the Feasibility Study process, serving as the Owner’s Project Manager. As work continues, the Committee - assisted by SMMA and Perkins and Will - will investigate renovation, renovation and addition, and new construction options.
At its meeting this week, the SSBC met members of the Perkins and Will team and discussed next steps in the timeline, including moving to bi-weekly meetings in July and participating in educational visioning workshops in late July that will include outreach to the entire community.
