SHS Boys' Soccer Squad to Participate in 'Kicks for Cancer' Event

The Stoneham High School boys' soccer team is expected to participate in a day-long festival to help raise money that will benefit the women's cancer research at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute.

The boys' soccer is expected to play Wakefield Memorial High on Saturday as part of a day-long event at Concord Carlisle High School called “Kicks for Cancer.”

The first games will kickoff at 3 p.m. and the last games will start at 7:30 p.m. The fundraiser is now in its fifth year, but Stoneham is new to the idea and Stoneham coach Jim Carino was honored to be asked to play.

“I was pleased that Stoneham soccer has the reputation of a program where its student-athletes get involved and try to make a difference,” Carino said. “So, I was flattered that we were asked.”

The event, which costs $10 for adults and $5 for children, will feature 12 teams, six of which are from the Middlesex League. All proceeds will benefit women’s cancer research at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute.

Carino spoke highly of his players and their hard work to make a difference in people’s lives.

“The players have been great. They have many ideas and are excited to raise a substantial amount of money,” Carino said. “Many know people who could benefit directly by this and want to make sure they can do their best.

"The parents have also been fantastic. They have really been the ones who have led the charge (and) they deserve a great measure of thanks for the whole initiative."

The team is actively seeking donations and many of the parents are donating time and goods to make sure Stoneham goes to the game with a large donation.

“The more people who attend the game, the more money that will (be) donated to Dana-Farber," Carino said. "(The players) are encouraging tailgating and making the day a celebration.”
