With Snip Of A Ribbon, Greenway Officially Opens

State and town officials join with Cameron Bain in official opening of the Tri-Community Greenway.

STONEHAM, Ma. - The Friends of the Tri-Community Greenway joined with state officials Saturday to make official what residents have known for some time. The Greenway is open for business.

Under sunny skies a ribbon was cut on the Greenway in Stoneham between Pleasant Street and Pomeworth Street, signaling the end of a process that started decades ago, championed by Stoneham's Cameron Bain. Stoneham held an unofficial ceremony to name the Greenway in Bain's honor in November. In addition to the ribbon-cutting there was a ceremonial first ride down the Greenway led by bikes decorated for the occasion. Close to 200 people turned out including kids who were having fun playing with chalk on the Greenway. And of course, Cameron Bain cut the ribbon.

The $5 million Massachusetts Department of Transportation project used a combination of federal and state funds and has been under construction since May of 2017 by Northern Construction.

The Greenway will be an invaluable resource for its tri-communities – Winchester, Woburn and Stoneham. The 6.63 mile multi-use trail is for local residents to walk, jog, bike, roller blade, commute or just relax and enjoy a nice summer day. Each town has a slightly different personality with a 45-foot-wide linear park on a former railroad bed in Stoneham and parts of Woburn, a connection of local streets and parks through Winchester and finally a spur connecting to recreational land at Horn Pond in Woburn.
