Stone Zoo Welcomes Newborn Red-Rumped Agouti Twins

The sex of these new adorable twins is not yet known, but they were born on Sept. 30.

STONEHAM, MA — The Stone Zoo recently welcomed a new set of newborns.

The zoo announced Wednesday that two red-rumped agouti twins were born on Sept. 30. The sexes of these twins are not yet known, but the two join three other red-rumped agoutis at the zoo.

According to the Stone Zoo, red-rumped agoutis live in pairs or small family groups consisting of a mating pair and their offspring. The two were born to their parents Fernanda and Habanera.

According to the Smithsonian National Zoo, the agoutis are native to French Guiana, Guyana, Suriname, Trinidad and Tobago and parts of Venezuela, Colombia and Brazil. Similar to the appearance of the guinea pig, the agoutis are named for their red backsides.
