Stoneham Baseball At 4-14 Earns Tournament Shot

Seeded 20th out of 20 teams in Division 3 North.

It's baseball, and anything can happen.

That's what the Stoneham High baseball team believes after making the Division 3 North tournament with a 4-14 record. The key wasn't the record, but rather the Spartans record against teams in their own Division. With two wins over Watertown, in addition to beating Winchester and Wakefield, it was enough to get into the field.

Stoneham will head to No. 13 seed Swampscott (11-10) for a preliminary round game Thursday. A win Thursday and it's off to East Boston for a matchup with the No. 4 seeded Jets on Saturday. The Spartans hope to follow the same formula as their hockey team, which made the tournament at 10-8-2, then proved the benefits of a competitive Middlesex League schedule, by making a run to the Division 2 North final.
