Stoneham Fire Chief Warns Of Sparking TikTok Trend
The viral videos show teens sliding a penny between an electrical outlet and exposed metal prongs causing sparks and in some cases, fires.

STONEHAM, MA — Stoneham Fire Chief Matt Grafton is joining fire officials across the state in warning of a viral video challenge that has teens attempting a dangerous trick and is being blamed for two fire incidents in Massachusetts.
On Jan. 21, State Fire Marshal Peter Ostroskey released an advisory about two incidents in Massachusetts related to a new challenge on the popular video app, TikTok.
The challenge involves partially plugging in a phone charger and sliding a penny down the wall onto the exposed prongs. This results in sparks, electrical system damages and, in some cases, a fire. To view the video of the challenge, click here.

"This trend puts people at high risk of serious injuries, and can result in electrical damage and possible fires," Grafton said in a statement. "Hopefully, by spreading awareness of the trend, parents and the community will be able to educate teens about the dangers of this trend and encourage them not to participate."
Grafton reminded the public about the electrical fire safety tips from the U.S. Fire Administration:
