Stoneham Firefighters Save Dog From Burning Home

Emergency crews found the family dog on the second floor of a burning home on North Street Wednesday.

STONEHAM, MA — Emergency crews saved a dog from a two-alarm fire in Stoneham Wednesday. Firefighters were called to 164 North St. at 1:49 p.m. and found smoke and flames inside the home, according to the Stoneham Fire Department.

The fire began on the first floor and extended into the walls and attic, the fire department said. No one was home at the time, but crews rescued a dog from the second floor.

"All of the responding crews did a great job working quickly as a team to bring this incident under control," Chief Matthew Grafton said. "I’m grateful that nobody was hurt, including the family dog who was able to be removed and brought to safety outside."

The house is uninhabitable, fire officials said. The American Red Cross is helping residents find temporary housing.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
