UPDATED: Stoneham Man Remains in 'Critical Condition' at Massachusetts General Hospital

A Stoneham man struck by a television news sport utility vehicle (SUV) Tuesday remains in "critical condition" at Massachusetts General Hospital, according to a spokesperson for the Middlesex District Attorney's Office Thursday.

A 25-year-old Stoneham man suffered life-threatening injuries when a SUV struck him on Route 93 northbound just south of Exit 29 in Somerville Tuesday morning, according to a press statement by Massachusetts State Police.

At 2:30 a.m., State Police in Medford responded to a report of a crash involving a SUV, owned by WHDH Channel 7 and driven by an employee at the TV station, and a pedestrian.

"Initial investigation indicates that the victim, a 25-year-old male from Stoneham may have been outside of his disabled 2002 Hyundai Elantra when he was struck by a 42-year-old male from Sudbury driving a 2010 Ford Explorer," the statement reads.

The accident "remains under investigation" and no charges have filed as of Thursday afternoon, according to Cara O'Brien, deputy director of the Middlesex District Attorney's Office.

The victim was transported to Massachusetts General Hospital, police said. The investigation into the crash remains ongoing by Troop A of the Massachusetts State Police along with the State Police Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Section.

"Among the facts and circumstances that are subject of the ongoing investigation are why the victim’s car was stopped at that location, why he was walking across the highway, his condition at the time of the crash, and the speed of the Explorer," reads the statement. "The victim’s Elantra had front-end damage that suggests it was involved in a prior crash. There was no debris field at the location where it was stopped, leading to the belief that it may have been involved in (a) prior crash elsewhere."

The Massachusetts Department of Transportation Highways Division and the Somerville Fire Department were on scene shortly after the accident was reported, according to State Police.

At 4:11 a.m., the right and left travel lanes were closed and later reopened.

Police have not released the name of the victim.
