UPDATED: Stoneham Negotiates Long-Term Contract with Trash Collector

The town has negotiated a long-term contract with Casella Waste Management of Peabody.

STONEHAM, MA — The Town of Stoneham has announced that it has negotiated a long-term contract with a new trash collecting company.

In an alert to residents, the Town announced that it has come to an agreement with Casella Waste Management of Peabody. Interim Town Administrator Robert Markel told Patch that the town's previous collector Hiltz Waste Disposal had informed them Wednesday that they would stop trash collection immediately. The town had been alerted in July that the company was no longer bonded, and were going to stop collecting on Oct. 1

"Fortunately I had made meetings with four other companies with bids (for the town's trash collecting contract)," Markel said. "We were fortunate that meetings had already been set up."

The Town was able to ink a 10-year agreement with Casella, with the last three years of the deal coming at the town's option. Markel also added that Casella will be working to collect trash from Thursday and Friday customers, and will not stop until all trash is collected.

Recyclables will not be collected until Tuesday, when trash and recycling collection will resume.
