Music, ice cream, raffles, crafts, and activities for the kids, guest speakers and community tables. Bring a picnic lunch. Fun for all ages.
Thursday, June 16, Juneteenth Celebration on the Common, 6:30 p.m.-- Families and individuals of all ages are invited to join in Stoneham’s Juneteenth celebration Thursday evening on the Common. Medford Poet Laureate Terry Carter will join Stoneham officials and residents on Thursday to mark the official end of slavery in the United States.

The June event marks the date in 1865 when General Gordon Granger arrived in Galveston with a proclamation that the Civil War was over and that “all slaves are free.” This event brought enforcement of the Emancipation Proclamation signed by President Lincoln two years before. Juneteenth has since become a day for celebration and commemoration of the legal end of slavery in the United States.
Terry Carter is the author of six books of poems. He has conducted workshops in Stoneham schools. An accomplished orator, he will read poems relating to Juneteenth and to African-American life and culture in our area. June 19, which falls on Saturday this year, became an official holiday after bills signed by both Governor Baker and President Biden made it the country’s and state’s newest holiday.

June 23, Movie & Pizza at the Library, 6 p.m. --The acclaimed film, ‘THE HATE U GIVE,’ has been selected for Movie Night, June 23, at the Stoneham Public Library. Staring Amanda Stenberg, the film is based on Angie Thomas’ award-winning book and deals frankly with issues of race and racism. It’s recommended for high school students and adults. The free screening is sponsored by the Stoneham Public Library, Stoneham for Social Justice and supported by the Human Rights Commission and SOAR. Join us for pizza at 6 p.m. in the Marcy Room, followed by film and discussion.

June 5, Pamela Means Concert, 3PM, UU Church of Reading, 239 Woburn Street.
This free concert features Pamela Means in “Power of the Protest Song: Our Shared History & Present Day.” Part performance and part presentation, it will explore the origin stories and lineages of protest songs, how their meanings and impacts continue to transform through time and space, and how they have inspired–and continue to inspire–movements and cultural shifts within the realms of racial and social justice. Masks required.
