Stoneham Sports Roundup: Sept. 17-23

A look at all the local sports action from around Stoneham last week.

The football team got back on the winning track this week, handling Brighton High 21-12 at home. The Spartans are now 2-1 overall, and have yet to open competition in the Middlesex League Small School Division.

A pair of Paul Delorfano touchdown runs ultimately made the difference for the Spartans, especially his second, which came in the final frame and provided some breathing room for Stoneham as they clung to a narrow two-point lead.

After spotting the Bengals a 6-0 lead in the opening stanza, Delorfano gave Stoneham a 7-6 lead with the first of his touchdown runs, a 20-yard effort. Anthony Adonidis added the point after.

Brighton struck back early in the second quarter, but the Spartans offense would again reply, as Eric Mooney corralled a 64-yard pass from signal-caller Andrew Lann for Stoneham’s second score of the second quarter. Delorfano’s marvelous 57-yard touchdown run in the fourth put the game squarely in the win column for Stoneham.

The Spartans open league play next week against Winchester on Sept. 30.
