In December, 2021, the Stoneham Transportation Advisory Committee (STAC) met in a hybrid meeting with members from the MBTA, Mass DOT, State and Local Elected officials, as well as Stoneham Department heads and the Town Administrator. The focus of this meeting was to hear from MBTA and Mass DOT officials on the details of the “Better Bus Network Re-Design”. Their plans are expected to be finalized by the spring of 2022.

The Bus Network Redesign is a multi-year process that examines the system as a whole to create a network that responds to the changing needs of the region. Their plan is to simplify a complicated network, create a more equitable network, make transit a competitive alternative to driving, and maximize access to opportunities. The MBTA believes that when they look at the entire network, only a complete redesign can fix existing problems.

“Robust engagement and critical analysis are crucial pieces to addressing the ongoing challenges with the existing bus service,” stated Erin Wortman, Stoneham’s Director of Planning and Community Development. “As a region, we must address first- and last-mile solutions and find ways to enhance the overall ridership experience.”

STAC members have attended multiple meetings/presentations held by these groups and have continually advocated for greater MBTA services to the residents of Stoneham. In relation to surrounding communities, Stoneham has the least amount of access to public transportation connections. STAC also advocated the needs of Stoneham residents regarding public transportation and cross town connections to our neighboring cities & towns, particularly with the significant increase of housing and shift in mobility needs over the past few years.

“There is a demand for better mobility in Stoneham, and the East/ West connections to the commuter rail. Every neighboring city or town has a rail system, and we do not have any way to access that currently” added Select Board member Raymie Parker. “STAC is eager to have new community members join this very important effort. Joining a meeting is a great way to learn how we work and what we hope to do."
