Cory Mashburn Asks For Your Support For School Committee Run
In a Letter to the Editor, Mashburn says his goal is to help improve the lives of the youth, families and the community of Stoneham.

A Letter to the Editor from Cory Mashburn, candidate for Stoneham School Committee:
My name is Cory Mashburn and I am running for School Committee in our town and asking for one of your two votes on April 3, 2018. I am a parent of two girls, I am a prevention specialist, and I am a proud member of the Stoneham community.
Though I have joined the Stoneham community more recently I do know what it is like to live in a small community that supports each other. I was raised in a military family, where I attended schools all over the world – learning about different cultures, backgrounds, and why it is so important to live in a caring
community. Growing up in a military family and moving around the world made me who I am today and I am very proud of that. My father was in the Marine Corps for 34 years and he taught me how to be a community and family man all in one. Since my father passed away in 2004 to esophageal cancer I have pushed myself to live a life for which he would be proud. I am proud of the accomplishments that my work within communities and schools systems has achieved. I love advocating for students, implementing programs, and fostering
collaboration between community groups and municipal government.

My wife and I chose Stoneham as a community and school system in which we could provide our children with a healthy childhood and excellent education. We have found that Stoneham has some great educators and a good school system. But, even if something is good shouldn’t we strive to enhance it?
For the past 10 years I have been working in the prevention field for municipal governments, using the values my father taught me, focusing my time and skills to improve the lives of students and youth. We utilize local youth data to drive prevention services that are grounded in current research-based best practices. Discussion and implementation require building community involvement, utilizing key stakeholders in the community and including the parents, teachers and youth in every step of the process. I work directly with and in the schools to develop prevention initiatives that address bullying, substance use, social/emotional behavior, and develop mental health services.
