Tri-Community Greenway Ribbon Cutting Saturday

STONEHAM, Ma. - After many decades of planning and years of construction, the official opening and ribbon-cutting for the Tri-Community Greenway is scheduled for Saturday at 10 a.m. The ceremony and festivities will be located at the Pomeworth Street crossing in Stoneham.

This is across from the Stoneham Middle School Entrance on Pomeworth St in Stoneham. (rain location is in the Stoneham Middle School.)

Senator Jason Lewis and the Friends group are planning fun activities for all ages at the site of the Ribbon cutting, included a historic walk of the Stoneham section (2.3 mile section) and a guided ride of the trail. In cooperation with Stoneham Recreation, bike decorating will start from 9:30 for a ceremonial first ride down the Greenway. Bring your bike, scooter, baby carriage, wheelchair or just walk to join us for the ribbon cutting and festivities celebrating the opening. Also bring a picnic lunch to enjoy afterward in the park and middle school lawn with your friends and neighbors.

The $5 million Massachusetts Department of Transportation project used a combination of federal and state funds and has been under construction since May of 2017 by Northern Construction. First envisioned in the 1980s by Stoneham resident Cameron Bain, the trail has been 30 years in the making for supporters.

The Greenway will be an invaluable resource for its tri-communities – Winchester, Woburn and Stoneham.. The 6.63 mile multi-use trail is for local residents to walk, jog, bike, roller blade, commute or just relax and enjoy a nice summer day. Each town has a slightly different personality with a 45-foot-wide "linear park" on a former railroad bed in Stoneham and parts of Woburn, a connection of local streets and parks through Winchester and finally a spur connecting to recreational land at Horn Pond in Woburn.

All sections share the vision for connection the towns, providing valuable recreational space for local residents and increased potential customers for businesses along the trail.
