Water Main Break On North Street

Police Chief James McIntyre and Fire Chief Matthew Grafton report that the Stoneham police and fire departments responded to a water main break on North Street early Saturday morning.

At approximately 7 a.m., police received multiple reports of water in the area of 74 and 78 North St., between Main and George streets.

Upon arrival to the scene, police saw a large pool of water in the road, and immediately notified the Fire Department and the Department of Public Works.

Responding crews determined that a 12-inch residential water main had cracked and was causing water to fill a section of North Street. The water then traveled south into multiple yards on North Street, George Street and Westwood Road. Some houses had water damage to their basements.

Eversource, the town's electricity provider, along with National Grid responded. One resident's power was shut off during the incident.

No homes were evacuated and no injuries were reported.

In the early stages of the repair, some businesses on Main Street and the Bear Hill Rehabilitation and Nursing Center on North Street experienced a disruption in their water service.

Crews will remain on scene for the next several hours repairing the pipe.

While work is being completed, North Street, between Main Street and Northgate Road, will remain closed.
