COMMUNITY MORE THAN A WORD

Many English words are derived from Latin. Some call it a dead language, I disagree! If you have studied science. medicine, or even law, you would testify to the fact that Latin, is very much alive in our everyday world.

In Latin, the word community is 'communitas'. There are many ways to equate this word into English, its not a translation, it becomes an understanding of the term. Let us try by taking the prefix 'com' which means either 'with/together' essentially 'as one'. The second parts of the word are root words as 'munus' translation is 'gift', and/or 'unitas' meaning 'one'. These can be interpreted as an understanding of a common interest, joint possession, partnership, or fellowship.

Let's understand this word in English. The word 'community' we use so frequently, is to express a social group that shares common interests, complimented by a freedom to express an individual opinion as we collectively working for the 'greater good'

Now, to apply this in Stoneham politics for a moment. On April 1st, we have an election for a seat on the Board of Selectmen. There is a competition for this position fostering a healthy atmosphere for discussion. On Wednesday night, there was a public conversation between the two candidates, Raymie Parker, and the incumbent Ann Marie O'Neill. During this conversation, in the spirit of community, Raymie, cordially agreed, with O'Neill, on five of the thirteen questions. Within the other eight questions both appeared to be on the same page speaking of how to deal with community issues, such as eliminating red tape for the permitting process, improving communication with residents on issues, and a higher transparency within the budget process.

Once again, I  proudly state that I invested my vote in Raymie Parker. My main reason is that I believe Raymie represents our collective view of this small village community. A vision of joining people with common interests to address our problems with integrity, fairness, and pride. I guess Raymie summed it up for me when she said, 'She has a vision of business friendly, safe community,....... a kinder, and a nicer Stoneham, for all of us to be proud! Raymie Parker will add cohesiveness, the much needed glue to Stoneham, as a community. We should congratulate both candidates for their participation within the public process.

In fact, let's check in with the Greek philosopher, Aristotle. One of his ancient Greek principals in politics was for citizens at large to self govern for the greater good. Let's welcome new candidates to preserve "the greater good"!!!
